It’s about that time for another frustrated rant. Todays rant… TORRE’S MISUSE of the BULLPEN!!
Joe Torre complains about how the bullpen leads the league in most appearances and most innings pitched… YET, he is the one to blame!!
Torre has completely misused his bullpen the past few years, and over works them unneccessarily.
I’m so tired of seeing a starting pitcher on the Yankees get taken out after 7 innings, when he is pitching a GEM and only has a pitch count in the 70’s or 80’s. (ie: Matt DeSalvo the other night). Any other smart manager will NOT remove a starting pitcher who is pitching great, and has only 70-90 pitches after 7 innings. Most managers have guys throw between 100-125 pitches … especailly if they are shutting a team down. Not only does taking the pitcher out, BLOW the games …but it also uses the bullpen, when it is NOT needed!!
Aside from taking starters out way too early…the other problem is trying to use 4 relievers for 2-3 innings of work. If a guy gets a 1-2-3 inning, let him pitch the next inning. Not only are you unnecessarily using extra pitchers that could be resting…you are also raising the percentage of blowing the game. If you bring in 3-4 pitchers for 3 innings, there is a greater chance that ONE of those pitchers will not be effective.
I’m tired of the “by the {Torre} book” managing of pitching. There is no RULE that says “Proctor MUST pitch the 7th, Farnsworth MUST pitch the 8th, Rivera must pitch the 9th”. There is no rule that says “MYERS MUST pitch to one lefty and leave”. If you are going to use the same “by the {torre} book” of managing every game, then whats the point of managing??
Baseball is a game of FEEL and streaks… Pitching is a game of “your ON or your not” …. So why try to make more moves than necessary when something is winning??
At the end of this season…when our pitchers lead the league in appearances, and are too tired down the stretch from being misused…. REMEMBER THIS RANT!! When a starter is throwing a shutout after 7 innings, and Torre brings in Vizcaino or Farnsworth for NO REASON in the 8th, and they blow the game… REMEMBER THIS RANT!!!

I totally agree. For instance, tonight…No need to relieve the reliever Proctor. He was doing just fine when Torre took him out. In fact, we should use him now while we can b/c he’ll have plenty of time to rest when he sits out his 4 game suspension despite his effort now to appeal.

If he’s now serving a 4-game suspension (he’s dropped the appeal) does tonight not count as a game b/c it’s postponed? Hmmmm…

I sincerely believe Proctor got suspended on purpose. How else was he going to get rest?
Ever since Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, Torre hasn’t been the same manager.
Or, you know, ever since Zimmer stopped managing the team.

[…] for the runner on base which Proctor walked in. Once again, Joe Torre had to coach by the “Torre Manual/Rule Book“, and pull Mike Mussina after walking just one batter in the 7th. Not only was he dumb enough […]
